What to Eat (and not) During Pregnancy

A healthy diet is important for anyone at any stage in life, however when you’re eating for two there’s a lot of additional information to consider. This is a vital point in time for a little person so you want to make certain that you eat the correct foods and avoid the bad stuff. You must deliver the proper nutrition to give your offspring the best chance possible at a healthy life without complications. In the past we didn’t have nearly as much documentation, but now that we do it should be important to every mom. Luckily, there’s quite a bit of information I can share with you that can steer you in the right direction. I’ll cover a few major points that should help you immensely.

1) What To Eat While Pregnant

The most simple way to view this is a 20% rule. Take most of the factors involved with eating and increase it by around 20%. This goes for calories, nutrients, and vitamins. For example, if your calorie maintenance is 2,000 per day then you’d want to increase it to around 2,400 per day. This is not an exact figure that fits all situations. It’s just a basic guideline. You won’t need precisely that amount for every aspect of your diet. A few of the important parts would be increasing your protein, vitamins C & D, and even riboflavin. Yes, that funny word you see on the back of many products is actually useful. Some good foods to eat while pregnant would be an extra orange or banana during the course of a day. You’ll want to have an extra helping of meat. If you don’t eat meat then you’ll have to compensate with other foods that you should be familiar with if you are a vegetarian.

2) Foods To Avoid During Pregnancy

Honestly, knowing what not to eat while pregnant is more about avoiding certain food delivery methods and poor preparation than it is avoiding specific food items. However, there are some that you should certainly avoid. A big problem for pregnancy could potentially be vitamin A. This means you should not chow down on carrots or liver, for example. You won’t necessarily experience complications if you ingest some small amounts of it, but you should take care not to consume copious quantities. Take the time and effort to understand which foods have how much of any nutrient or vitamin.

Some of the biggest dangers involve poor food preparation. You must make sure that vegetables and fruit are washed and scrubbed thoroughly before eating. Also, when cooking meats and animal related products, do a good and complete job of cleaning and cooking. It is very, very dangerous to not cook animal products until done. You’ll want to avoid ingesting harmful bacteria that may not cause problems to a normal adult, but could inflict harm on a fetus. Bacteria like this can also be found in various types of cheese (mainly the soft kinds).

Additionally, this should go without saying, but don’t consume alcohol products. I know some people consider these to be a food group, but you need to avoid them completely. Obviously straight up beer and whiskey is well known to cause issues, but companies have a way of tricking people in order to gain profit. What’s happened lately is that sugary type drinks that include alcohol have become very popular. They look like fruit-flavored sodas and even taste that way, but they are loaded with way too much sugar and, of course, alcohol. Be careful. Not only can this harm your fetus, but you’ll be packing on the pounds way too fast.

3) Weird Pregnancy Cravings

This is probably the most bizarre portion of this topic. Food cravings while pregnant have taken on all sorts of shapes and forms. They range from boring to outright strange. A good example from my own past is a relative that would take pickles spears and dip them in pistachio ice cream. That’s something I just don’t want to think about, much less try to eat. Another relative would also eat pickles, but in this case it was with peanut butter. That’s something I’ve actually tried and found to be an interesting snack. Then again, peanut butter can go with almost anything, but not ice cream obviously. I don’t suppose I would pair it with meat either, but I haven’t read about any pregnant women pulling that one.

The most well known, odd thing to eat would likely be dirt. You’ve heard stories about this I’m sure. Given the amount of chemicals and such that are dumped into our environment I would strongly advise against eating something like this from the local ground. This goes for any other funky snack like tree bark or leaves. Don’t do this. Maybe you could get away with it a thousand years ago, but in this day and age you’re likely to consume a pesticide.

All in all, if you want to try some strange foods then that’s fine. Just make sure to obey the proper guidelines for how those foods are prepared. Understand which foods have things in them that you should be avoiding in any case and you will most likely be alright. I must qualify all of this by stating that it’s best to consult with your physician. There could be factors at play that are unknown by me and perhaps even you.
